Our Sustainability Aspirations
As a young technical university, Obuda University is committed to the realization of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This is reflected in our education, research, and student programs, and it also appears in strengthening environmental awareness. At our university we are dedicated to operating in accordance with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles. We have embarked on a green path whose foundations were laid in 2023. We established the Greenmetric Committee, whose main task is to coordinate, support, and promote the development of the university’s sustainability-related activities.
I regard sustainability as one of the outstanding elements of my rectoral strategy, which is why I elevated it to the level of vice-rector and entrusted its management to a specialist. Under the leadership of the Vice Rector for Sustainability and Startegic Development, on 2 December 2024 we established the Sustainability Council, which began its operation as a recommending, consultative, and advisory body on the university’s relevant matters.
Every organizational unit actively participates in the Council’s work, and its members cooperate in building on each other’s strengths in pursuit of our shared goal.
Environmental protection, sustainability objectives, and the tasks defined accordingly can no longer be excluded from any engineering training area. Our goal is to train professionals who respect and protect the environment, understand its processes, and not only know environmental values, but manage them in a sustainable way.
In our IT and technical training, we educate professionals who, by virtue of their knowledge, contribute to making production processes and services more effective and sustainable, and in our economics programs, our students promote their economic and social usefulness.
In industrial product and design engineering education—consistent with outcome requirements that mandate these competencies—we continuously strive to facilitate the development of environmentally conscious behavior. Integration of environmental awareness appears concretely in general coursework, and at least one course in each specialization has this as a highlighted objective.
Education and research in sustainable built environments, smart buildings, and green energy also carry significant weight, and these principles are strongly represented in our civil engineering and architecture programs.
Our medical informatics education and research aim to train professionals specialized in applying sustainable technologies that effectively serve human well-being. With new results from our research activities, we contribute to the continuous development of the field.
In response to contemporary challenges, we strive to promote a safer future through the training of high-quality and practice-oriented cybersecurity professionals, where the protection of individuals and communities against threats originating from cyberspace becomes increasingly important.
In designing the curriculum of our agricultural training, we also pay special attention to applying the principles of sustainable agriculture. We consider adequate training for future agricultural experts indispensable in responding to global challenges and promoting sustainable development.
To accelerate research and development activities, in 2025 we are establishing the Sustainability Research Center, which will operate in cooperation with the University’s Research and Innovation Center and the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
As a technical university, we are committed to supporting women in pursuing studies in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). By encouraging and creating a supportive environment, we strive to ensure that the principles of equal opportunity prevail in every segment of the university.
We also give priority to the health, safety, and well-being of our university community. Our comprehensive well-being program was launched as a pilot in 2024, and seeing its success, we will elevate it to institutional level in 2025.
Obuda University’s part of social responsibility is to provide quality education not only in Hungary’s developing regions but beyond its borders. We provide off-campus education in Székelyudvarhely and Subotica, and simultaneously collaborate closely with numerous cross-border universities, offering young people living there the possibility to stay in their homeland.
As one of Hungary’s leading technical higher education institutions, we are working on implementing an ESG system that provides the overarching framework for our sustainability efforts.
